Abstract

The flaneur is a figure who wanders idly and cleverly the streets in urban displacements. Many journalists who write travel books become, even unconsciously, one of these figures. Based on a survey of works produced by Brazilian journalists on international journeys, this research identified five books of authors in transit through the United States. Although they were written at different times (from 1941 to 2015), the analysis shows that they present some common traits, among them the autobiographical narrative with reflections on the places visited, in displacements made in totally different ways in comparison with the common tourist: walking along the streets and knowing more closely the culture of the country visited.
